The basic cheat biology and the half truths.
The first thing to appreciate is that only real danger will cause the body to react. Certainly if we sit through a horror movie or read a suspense novel we may become somewhat excited where there are “scary parts” if the acting was convincing or the writing compelling but this is not the same as real fear. Fear, which mobilizes the body, does not arise out of scary movies or well written books or past memories or traumas from the past, not unless there is something also going on in the present. Past events can be used to trouble someone and I will talk about that later. However that is just another type of cheat and that means danger is posed in the present.
The next thing to appreciate is that no matter what danger is posed and how we perceived it, i.e., insightfully or through our senses, the body will be immediately mobilized. We don’t investigate first to see if we need to energize the muscles. We energize the muscles and then investigate. So no matter what fancy label you want to use, whether “fight or flight response”, “the stress response” or fear, it is all the same thing EXACTLY!
Once the nature of the danger is perceived then the person will take some sort of action, either to take flight or to stay and fight.
Fighting or flighting is no longer fear, it is action and with action the body sustains high energy levels by virtue of the action being taken. In fear the body is mobilized ready for action. It is rather like revving your car engine up while you are at the lights ready to go when the lights go green. The body does a similar thing by sustaining high energy levels through extraordinary bodily reactivity.
What happens in mobilizing the body?
Fundamentally it means the muscles need to be readied in order to be able to do more work to move the skeleton, if need be. To do more work they need to make more energy. It is important to appreciate that the body does not store energy. It stores fuel chemicals, such as carbohydrates (which includes sugars), lipids (fats) and proteins, which will release energy when they are reacted with oxygen. These fuel chemicals are used to makes energy whenever and wherever it is needed. So for the muscle cells to make energy they must be provided with these fuel chemicals and oxygen.
To obtain more oxygen is relatively straight forward. The heart-lung system is stimulated to work harder and faster. The heart beats faster and pumps more blood. And as the heart and lungs are really two parts of one system, the one affects the other. So if the heart starts pumping faster then
the lungs work harder, so the breathing becomes deeper and faster. The blood is pumped through a fine network of blood vessels in the lungs.
Oxygen enters into these very small blood vessels in the lungs and is captured by the red blood cells. The blood returns to the heart and the heart then pumps the blood with the oxygen supply through the blood vessels (arteries), to the muscle cells.
Getting the fuel chemicals needed to the muscle cells is more involved. Muscle cells store small amounts of sugars in a form that can be used quickly but this is not enough for high energy production. They need more chemicals and they need to get them at a faster rate. The liver holds a store of sugar that can be immediately transport to the muscles through the blood vessels but that is also limited. So if a lot of work needs to be done or if the muscles need to be kept energized and in a state of readiness over time, which is after all what fear is all about, then a greater supply of fuel chemicals is needed. The body stores of fuel chemicals need to be used, so they need to be moved out of storage and made available in the form that the muscles can use them.
The next thing to appreciate is that all these jobs, from accelerating the heart and the movement of fuels out of storage, right up to the production of energy in muscle cells, all require hormones. And in fact large variety of hormones is involved.
What are Hormones?
Hormones are chemicals made in special glands called endocrine glands. The hormones produced enter directly into the blood stream and travel around the body. Specific hormones influence specific processes in body. For this reason they are called chemical messages that help determine the way the body functions. For example the adrenal gland is an endocrine gland, which produces hormones. One of the hormones it produces is adrenaline. Adrenaline acts on the heart to make it beat faster.
There are many hormones involved from various endocrine glands for the various processes that need to take place in the body. Fear involves processes that affect many areas of the body, both to stimulate them for action as for instance the heart, but also to put them into a state of dominancy, as for instance digestion and sexuality. And in some cases, such as immunity, fear can bring about opposite actions depending on whether the danger is perceived to be external or internal. If the danger is perceived to be external then immunity is declined. If on the other hand the danger is perceived to be internal then immunity may even be put into high gear. And for all these changes hormones play a very important role. So with fear there are many changes in hormonal levels and this is true whether the fear is mild, moderate or intense. And the more intense the fear, the more significant will be the changes in hormonal levels. And this is also true for the length of time that fear endures.
The effects of fear or what the medicos prefer to call “the fight or fight response” is well researched and fully recognized for the hormonal changes that are required in the body and which take place. But here’s the rub! If the fear is not caused by ideas that have arisen as a result of sensory information, then the fear is said to be “without apparent cause”. Of course to arrive at this they need to trash ESP. It is important to take a bit of a detour here to discuss ESP briefly because this is the means by which the person is made aware of danger and hence fearful. But it is also the means by which medicos find cause to call hormonal imbalances and even chemical imbalances in the brain.
Part of a large subject known as psi is our ability to mentally perceive. Our ability to mentally perceive can be seen both inside and outside of personal relationships. Outside of personal relationships, for most people, the level of direct mental perception drops to very, very low. And this is how all scientific experiments are done; thus the fiery debate about psi. Is it real or not? This question can be asked when such low levels are all that is on the table. However this is not all that there is. Far from it! Inside of personal relationships mental perception can be seen and demonstrated dramatically. I am calling this form of direct mental or extrasensory perception (ESP) as insightful perception to distinguish it from the perception we may have as our more general relationship with everything in the universe, which we may call intuitive perception. It is very important to realize how the many and various experiments are done to shroud this matter. It is equally important to realise that the form of mental communication is also significant. Some are more difficult to detect, which again shroud this very real form of ESP.
a direct mental address is much more readily perceived
the passive perception of an image. It is a lot harder to perceive something that another person is just looking at and particularly if the image does not stir emotion.
ESP is a natural ability of everyone. You don’t have to be “a psychic”. BUT there must be
1. relationship and
2. knowledge clearly communicated mentally.
Most people have been discouraged from using or relying on their insight, so while it is there for them they don’t use it and hence don’t even appreciate what they have. Your ESP ability can, in some cheats, be the difference between life and death! It is hugely important.
Much of the distrust of ESP comes from toxic people around the person who is being harassed and these toxic people are both inside and outside of their personal relationships, which include family. However as I mentioned above there is misinformation communicated to the public by the medical industry. ESP is being put into grave doubt by doing medical /scientific experiments either without relationship (i.e., using double blinding in all cases) or without good mental communication or both, Double blinding, which is treated as a standard, removes relationship so the level of ESP drops to a barely discernible level. This is fine for testing intuition but it is sabotage if testing for insightful perception.
Take for example a person who claims to be a psychic.
Let’s says that he can determine what another person is thinking by asking that person some multiple choice questions and then checking each answer by holding the person’s hand. His method doesn’t matter. The method is either a gimmick or an aid. The ESP is independent of the method.
To test the validity of the psychic’s claim scientific experiments need to be done. If experiments are double blinded then the relationship is removed so the knowledge that is being tested for is not present.
So for instance you can’t see if the psychic person knows what the subject is thinking if the subject has no knowledge and hence thinks nothing. This is using methodology that is inappropriate for investigating ESP.
However these experiments can be deliberately tampered with using ESP.
ESP can be used to deliberately give the psychic a bum steer. And this is difficult to detect.
However the really bad situation is that insightful perception (ESP) is not simply trashed, it is upheld as a sign and symptom of madness. This is a part of the “laundry service”. The medical industry cleans away the cheats and that of course means the culprits remain clean of any blame. Instead the victim is blamed for their woes.
The culprits create lots and lots of victims and the victims can be milked for money and not only of the patient but more so from the public purse. Madness gives them a mandate from the public. The public are made to fear those that are supposedly mentally ill, and feel that drugs are the only way, so psychiatrists can push drugs and make profits.
Once they scrap ESP and even call it madness, then the hormonal changes that take place owing to emotions, not only fear but any other emotions as well, can be named “hormonal imbalances”. And even the stress is ticked off in a nebulous fashion. So the argument goes,
“you got hormonal imbalances, that’s why you’re stressed”.
Instead of the truth.
“You are stress and that is why your body is undergoing hormonal changes!”
So once you appreciate that ESP is no fantasy and that inside of relationship it is not only possible but potent, then you will be able to appreciate that there are no hormonal imbalances. All of the hormonal changes that take place are normal given the circumstances!
It is important to go a bit further with the idea of imbalances. They are talked about in many areas and not only for hormones. There is talk of chemical imbalances in the brain and this too is major garbage feed to the public by the psychiatric profession for profit’s sake.
Homeostasis and balance in the body.
The idea of balances comes with the concept of homeostasis. This is the body’s ability to self-regulate, under certain circumstances. The medicos talk about self-regulate as if it is a given overall but it is not. The body is able to maintain certain essential substances and functions within limits but not in all situations. The self-regulating ability of the body has been observed BUT with respect to changes in the external or physical environment ONLY. So for instance with weather changes of heat or cold the body will adjust so that the body temperature is kept at 37 degrees Celsius no matter how hot or cold it is outside. Another example is blood sugar levels, which are kept within a tight range. So while the blood sugar levels may rise after you have eaten and digested certain foods that end up as sugars and are carried to the storage locations in the blood stream. The body will soon remove all but the level of sugar that lies within the specific range from the blood stream. Furthermore the body’s system of checks and balances requires hormones. And these are regulated so the body will stop producing or begin producing a certain hormone depending on what’s going on in the person’s physical environment. However this is not true with respect to the internal or interpersonal environment. If it was then there would be no diabetes and many other diseases that eventuate with changes in substances or of functions of vital organs or both. What is the internal or interpersonal environment?
The internal environment is the mind. We tend to think of the mind as our private place and this idea is heavily pushed by the medical establishment and science in general. Most neuroscientists and certainly psychiatrists believe that the mind is generated out of the brain’s activities and complexity. The clear evidence of ESP throws a spanner in the works. There is no way that the mind can be your private space and generated by your brain or out of your brain’s activity and/or complexity if you can mentally perceive and even interact with others with whom you are related. And the closer and/or more trusted the relationship the greater the ESP. The mind in many ways can be considered as an interpersonal “space” or environment.
There are definitely collections of thoughts that give rise to particular bodily reactivity that have been accumulated over the years and which form your personality or ego-self. However this is only a very small part of the picture. The bigger picture takes in the entire creation. Everyone and everything, plant, animal and inanimate participates on the same platform. If there was no common platform then there would be no ESP or direct mental perceptions. They are greatly enhanced and obvious where there is relationship because relationship forms an entanglement. Hence we have a mental connection. You could think of it in one sense like the worldwide web. Every one participates in the same place but each has a private address that contains their stuff. And those that have each other’s addresses can communicate, while all can find the various websites and interact in a lesser fashion. In the mind the information comes in the form of ideas or packets of information and thoughts are our perception of those ideas.
Ideas of themselves are nothing but empty clouds in an empty sky! They are not in business for themselves. However if an idea is deemed to be true and applicable by the person then it will act, through reason, as a directive to the body. The volition of the person comes into play here and cause the body to take action. We see this very dramatically in the idea of danger. If the idea of danger relates to some character you’re watching on your television screen, it may make you feel apprehensive. If for instance you feel a bond with the character so that you care about them, you care what happens to them but your body will remain relatively calm. If however the idea of danger relates to you personally and you sense this danger is in your immediate surroundings then you will feel fear. This means that the idea has caused your body to undergo dramatic changes because firstly reason says your body could be harmed by the danger and your will is to protect your body. And we see this with all emotions. So If there are ideas of injustice, the body is moved with anger, ideas of loss lead to sadness, ideas of gain and pleasure lead to joy and ideas that are perplexing cause us to ruminate. In all cases there is a will for some action to take place in or by the body. All of these changes upset the rest state homeostasis of the body and some of them bring about significant changes but the body does not account for any of them. Emotional changes are outside the checks and balances of the body, which we characteristically see with respect to changes in the external or physical environment. Hence the body will continue to uphold fear reactivity while ever there is the idea of danger and your volition to protect your body. It will uphold anger reactivity while ever there is the idea of injustice and your will to address the injustice and so on.
All emotional reactivity of course involves hormonal changes. Hence a person who is angered repeatedly or continually over time, or who remains in a state of fear over time will continue to experience hormonal changes and changes to other substances such as blood sugar levels and they are not regulated as part of homeostasis. So for instance, while the person is angry the blood sugars will remain higher than normal. If the person is angered in a periodic or episodic fashion then, as I will discuss later, the body may not get a chance to bring the sugar back to normal in-between anger episodes. So gradually a residual level builds up and causes an overall high blood sugar level. This is a fundamental problem in diabetes. How can this be beaten? Easy, but you have to know the cheats. So if the ideas that give rise to anger are seen for what they are, then the person can choose to counter the cheat attacks. For one thing they can let go of the anger so it subsides and once the anger is gone the blood sugars can return to normal naturally. And I need to stress here anger management only guarantees the sugar levels remain high because it does not address the cause. It simply is a way of keeping the lid on the boiling pot. Medicos do not consider emotions to affect the body, or rename them so as to take distance from them. Hence all of the hormonal changes that take place owing to emotion can then be considered abnormal and treated with drugs. So people are treated with drugs for what is normal body function.
It is important to appreciate that regardless of the body’s adjustments to external conditions (homeostasis), there is no real state of balance even under normal conditions, where there are no cheats in other words. There is constant activity in the body even under the best of circumstances. In deep meditation or what some yoga schools call seedless Samadhi, there is total peace of mind and deep rest in the body but there is still activity in the body and as a result hormones are in a constant state of flux.
The reason is that every experience, hearing the song of a bird or smelling the waft of wattle from the trees or the cedar scents from the timber walls, all give rise to changes in the body. And those changes are all facilitated by hormones and other chemical agents. Much more so than in meditation, in inactive states in every day life there are many mental events (ideas) that occur and some of them give rise to changes in the body. There is no regulation when we consider our experience of life. There is no such thing as a “balanced state” from which we can say an imbalance has occurred. If a person is pathologically stressed, through the continual application of cheats (which are really mental attacks or attacks using ideas), then their body will undergo many changes and all of them involve huge hormonal changes. None of them are regulated by the body. There is no homeostasis here.
However it is not the hormonal changes, which doctors call imbalances, that cause severe discomfort and stress!
Consider the first type of cheat, in which the person feels only bodily excitation and/or high alertness. These involve two of the prominent qualities of fear, which doctors prefer to call “the stress response” or “the fight or flight response”. These people do not feel stressed, nor is the body stressed. Indeed the “fall in love at first sight” and it’s continuation of the “in love feeling” both feel good and may even be described as ‘wonderful’ by all those that are influenced in this way. But in both cases major hormonal changes are involved. And the greater the “high” the more hormonal changes there are. Let’s take another example. If you awaken from sleep suddenly and experience being highly alert immediately, you have been awakened by someone closely related to you. All they need is potential access, as for example a copy of your house key, some real criminals outside your house or flat with the key and a gun, and lastly the presentation of ideas that may obliquely point to danger or may even be symbolic and not obvious. And those ideas presented while you are still asleep will, under the real conditions present, cause you to awaken suddenly and be fully alert. The state is fear but it doesn’t feel like fear at all. You only feel wide awake, bright eyed and ready to start the day. So there may be slight or great changes in the levels of hormones in the body than are found at rest states. And what is more you body’s harmony has been upset from a deeply restful state but on awakening you don’t feel stressed, not unless other ideas are posed that may cause anxiety or depression etc. Even high grade fear can be and is used in some forms of excitation but even so the person doesn’t feel stressed by the fear alone nor the extreme hormonal changes in the body. The important point is that the person reports no stress. High levels of hormones and large hormonal changes may be taking place in the body but they are not a problem and may not even be identified, let alone be described as “hormonal imbalances” and stress. And it is the very same fear as in the other two states of anxiety and panic. So we can safely say, despite the medicos claims to the contrary, fear is not stress. So what is stress?
Next page I will answer this question.
